UKIP are the most successful minor party in British electoral history. Despite having no MP’s, no official backing from any major newspaper, and only 70 councillors UKIP were able to beat the Lib Dems and come third in 2004’s European Elections. Last year they went further, coming second and beating the governing Labour Party. Today UKIP send as many MEP’s to Brussels as Labour do. This is a formiddable achievement for a party that was only founded in 1993.

Despite this fantastic growth, there has been very little discussion or criticism of UKIP on the Left. This is despite UKIP representing a “radical” right-wing constituency, with MEP’s further to the right than most Tory MP’s and who would attack the standard of living of working people quite dramatically if elected.

Most concern on the Left to radical right wing parties has been directed to the growth of the BNP, who picked up 2 MEP’s at the last European Election. UKIP is very obviously and clearly not the same kind of party as the BNP but there is definitely competition between both parties for the same anti-EU, anti-Immigration, nationalist vote. This vote isn’t homogeneous however and there are important differences. UKIP attract a wealthier, home counties right-wing vote, compared to the BNP who attract support from much poorer areas in English cities.

UKIP and the BNP also have differences in how they view society should be organised; UKIP are made up of Thatcherites who are too Eurosceptic for the Tory Party but still uphold the free market and libertarian values. The BNP in contrast support protectionism for British companies – this has led to some on the Tory nutter right to attack the BNP as “Left-wing”. Farage, UKIP’s former leader and best known public figure says the difference between them and the BNP is that they are the “do what you like party” and the BNP are the “hang em and flog em party”.

Parliament for the jocks you say? What ho, no, let them use the one behind me!

Of course the biggest and most fundamental difference between the two parties is that the BNP is still a neo-Nazi organisation pretending to be a populist right wing one, while UKIP is just a populist right-wing party. UKIP doesn’t believe in the racial supremacy fantasies of the BNP and has no problems with ethnic minorities as candidates or members. It’s for this reason that it would be unimaginable (and wrong) for UKIP to be no platformed the way the BNP is.

Despite these important differences however, UKIP deserves a lot more attention and criticism from the Left than it has got. It’s generally been ignored by the Left as it is not in any position to control the Government or Local councils and because its not a fascist organisation like the BNP. However UKIP may not always be the eccentric party of ex-Tory Daily Mail readers, able to attract a bit of a laugh now and again with some Bernard Manning style comments about women or attacking the EU President as a damp rag.

UKIP’s potential danger can be seen in the man they invited last week to the House of Lords – Geert Wilders. UKIP’s leader, Lord Pearson invited Wilders to broadcast his anti-Muslim film “Fitna”. Wilders was also welcomed to London by the English Defence Leage, producing an unholy trinity of football casuals, ex-Tory lords and Wilders. This display was another example of the EDL are acting as violent thugs for ideas which are circulated and promoted by well heeled members of the establishment who are far more “respectable” than they are.

I likesh a shmoke and a pancake, but I don't likesh the Mushlimsh

UKIP have tried to justify their love in with Wilders on the basis that we need to have a discussion about “radical Islam”. Time and time again however Wilders has made clear that his problem is with Islam, and sees no difference between moderate and radical Muslims. Wilders today is the most successful far-Right politician in Europe, and has a real chance of becoming the next Prime Minister of the Netherlands.

Wilders has made it a demand for any coalition Government in which his Party for Freedom (PVV) takes part, that the hijab is banned from all public institutions; meaning any Muslim who wears the hijab will be banned from working in or using a library, swimming pool, school etc. Wilders does not even attempt to cover his attack on Muslims by saying its about secularism – he openly says Jewish skull caps and crucifixes will not be affected by this law, as they are a part of western culture.

People should remember that the hijab is not the burqa. Unlike the burqa, which is an extreme form of Islamic dress worn by a very small number of Muslims in Europe the Hijab is a far more modest headscarf little different from a nuns habit. The hijab is worn by a massive proportion of Muslim women – banning them from wearing it is a clear attack on their civil rights. There is no practical difference between someone who wears a hijab, a turban or skullcap in how they do their job or use public services. They have been singled out because they are Muslims.

Wilders has also called for the banning of the Koran, and for Guantanamo bay style facilities for Muslims in the Netherlands. He is also a staunch defender of Israel – Wilders PVV is in fact interested with fighting a war against the freedoms of the Netherlands’s Muslim minority.

How far UKIP will go down the PVV road remains to be seen, but it is clear that they are attempting to win support not just from attacking the EU but now from attacking Muslims. UKIP have become the first party in the UK to call for the banning of the Burka in all public places. This is further than even the BNP wants to go – they only want the burka banned in govt buildings. Whatever criticism can be made of the burka for it’s attacks on women’s rights it’s clear that if UKIP are cosying up with Wilders it is unlikely they are banning it to emancipate Muslim women.

UKIP also need to be dug up by the Left for their hypocrisy on the issues of democracy and accountability they claim to uphold. UKIP have won virtually all their support on their largely correct attacks on the European President and European Commission for being totally unaccountable and unelected – but they see no contradiction between these institutions and having an unelected Lord as leader! There is no attack on the House of Lords from UKIP on what it is, an undemocratic chamber which has the power to stop laws being made by a parliament with elected MP’s.

UKIP’s policy on Scotland also betrays their Tory roots – they call for the abolition of the Scottish Parliament, an act that would return Scotland to the bad old days of the 80’s where our votes were irrelevant, and the votes of middle England would decide who rules Scotland.

After all as bad as the EU parliament is, its done nothing like force the poll tax on Scotland using MP’s elected in England – but then again, that wouldn’t bother UKIP much seeing as they argue for a “flat tax”. A flat tax means that everyone pays the same amount of tax for their services regardless of their income, which was of course the exact same principle the poll tax used. They also call for a reduction in the rate of corporation tax, referring to Thatcher and Reagan’s UK and USA as a justification. This flat tax would also mean less funding for public services, cutting jobs and services in order to transfer even more wealth to the rich. This “freedom” for companies to do whatever they want is part of UKIP’s attack on the alleged “social democratic consensus” at Westminster.

Both this flat tax and reduction in corporation tax would be another salvo in a war which has been going on for 30 years, a war between the richest 1% of the population who have seen their wealth skyrocket whilst the working majority have seen their wealth stagnate or barely increase. Alongside their cosying up to someone who is determined to deny public services and jobs to Muslims in the Netherlands, it shows up UKIP as being a bit more dangerous than their charismatic and dotty English Toff MEP’s suggest.

Right now UKIP are unlikely to put into practice any of these policies. Both parties of the radical right in the UK, the BNP and UKIP have major barriers to growth. In the case of the BNP it’s their racism and neo-Nazi baggage. For UKIP its being identified as solely interested in Europe.

The PVV in the Netherlands shows that these barriers can be overcome however. If UKIP and the BNP dealt with these barriers by dumping Griffin and other neo-Nazis, paid more attention to domestic affairs and founded a new radical right party along the lines of the PVV there is little to stop them from emulating Wilders success. There is clearly a very large vote for opposing the EU, immigration, political correctness and for old school Tory values that Cameron has had to cede somewhat to take the centre ground.

Such a party of the radical right would pose a threat to Scotland’s democratic rights, working peoples status in the tax system, funding to public services and civil rights of Muslims in the UK. Remember that the next time you see Nigel Farage guffaw on Question Time and ask if anyone wants to go for a punt and a Pimms.

  1. Coming from a strong Labour background and now being the Chairman of UKIP’s youth wing, the left’s take on UKIP does really interest me.

As a working class boy with a lot of aspiration I support flat tax as I don’t see why those I grew up with and took the easy route of drugs, petty crime and juvenile delinquency should mean that I have to give the state 50%+ after I’ve worked my arse off to become financially comfortable.

I would also point out that you haven’t mentioned that we would raise the threshold for tax to £11,500, meaning those working minimum wage have incentive to work rather than stay on the dole.

And finally, we actually probably hate the BNP with more loathing than the other parties. After all it’s the BNP that have made the British flag, patriotism and sensible debate on race relations and immigration taboo subjects and it’s us who are going to defeat them by proposing sensible solutions to problems like uncontrolled EU immigration that those concearned of all races and creeds can support.

  2. schmoke and a pancacshe says:

know what’d make this even better? a video of andy bowden doing impressions of geert wildersch. now, THAT would be genius.

  3. Squeak says:

Firstly, to SSY folk – love how google alerts are working for us.

Now Michael Heaver (what a quality name for the head of the UKIP youth wing), as a former HMRC employee, lemme just say that you need to be making a SHITLOAD of money to get into the 50% tax rate bracket – hardly anyone will ever get there.

Also, easy route of drugs and petty crime beh beh beh. Where does that route go, may I ask?

And have you ever been on the dole? It’s shite, especially if you’re young and have to live on fifty quid a week.

  4. I’m a student and have to pretty much live on not that much more than fifty quid a week anyway. Only, under UKIP I wouldn’t because we’re going to abolish tuition fees.

Also, if you can bring yourself to have a look at our manifesto, we want to invest massively in restoring Britain’s manufacturing base. There really is a lot there for some on the left to get their teeth into.

The easy route of drugs and crime leads to prison, unemployment and social disorder, all paid for by the law abiding taxpayer’s. Hence my like of sympathy for those who chose not to make anything of their lives. Though UKIP’s policy of restoring grammar schools would have helped a lot of people I know get something more out of their experience in the state education sector.

Earning a shit load of money? That’s the plan!

As for my name – go on, do enlighten me why that’s of significance. :P

  5. Gordon says:

It’s an odd assumption that all poor people are drugged up criminals.

Now of all times should bring about a realisation that unemployment is usually more a problem of job supply than job demand. This is why unemployment goes up during a recession and down again during an economic boom; it is also why Labour’s attacks on the unemployed through the jobseeker system quickly hit a brick wall.

Not to mention the major problem of ‘working poor’, caused by the ridiculously low wages millions receive (which the 10% Sainsbury’s staff discount card can never quite makes up for). This is highlighted by the fact that the UK has nearly a third of children living in poverty, and the majority of those children live in working households. I doubt it would be helped by UKIP, who (from a quick google search) condemn every union action and seem pretty quiet on the subject of wages with an underlying desire to weaken or abolish the minimum wage — something that fits neatly with the idea of them being pseudo-libertarians.

On the issue of taxes, you will be delighted to hear that not only do we have a relatively flat tax system overall, but in fact the poorest quintile of society pays a 4% higher tax rate than the richest quintile: http://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Documents/ons7.jpg. And raising the tax threshold, while there is something to be said for it, would be an incredibly expensive way to help the poorest in society, since you would also be giving a tax cut (and a bigger one) to the wealthy. It would be far more effective to transfer funds away from the huge amounts provided to the wealthy (private pension tax breaks, etc) and towards something more useful.

  6. Liam says:

We don’t pay tuition fees in Scotland. Students are still poor.

  7. tobias says:

UKIP Policy is also to scrap free bus passes for pensioners. Something that they don’t want their older supporters to discover. I have great fun on the doorstep showing pro-UKIP pensioners the page from the UKIP policy documents after first asking them if they are enjoying their free bus pass. Their faces are a joy to behold :)

    http://www.ukip.org/content/ukip-policies/1430-transport-ukip-policy

6.9 UKIP will replace free bus passes with a 50% discount

  8. Squeak says:

Oh, I’ve read your manifesto before, don’t you worry.

Bringing back grammar schools?! You are too funny!

And yes, as Liam has pointed out we don’t pay tuition fees in Scotland, and the maximum support you get is roughly four and a half thousand pounds for a year.

I’m curious as to why you think a ‘route’ that you say leads to prison and all kinds of badness is the easy one. Nobody goes to themselves one day “Y’know, I think I want to commit a shitload of crime, take loads of drugs, fuck myself up and end up in jail!”. Oddly enough, people, and the paths of their lives, are a bit more complex than that. Would you care to venture a theory as to why so many folk in prison and who commit the kind of crime you’re talking about are from the poorest socioeconomic classes in society? Hint: if your answer involves in any way suggesting that poor people are lazy or bad or predisposed, then it’s wrong.

Living on the dole is not easy. It’s really quite shit, in fact. I’m a part-time student and on the dole, and I live on fifty quid a week and that’s it. No other benefit, no other money, no student support, just fifty quid a week. Why only fifty? Because I’m under twenty-five. But hey, if I was over twenty-five, I could get like sixty quid a week! Wow! I’m rich! But hey, I’m about to claim ESA due to anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress and the fact that it’s leaving me unable to work (not just my opinion, but my GP’s too). However, my DOCTOR saying I can’t work isn’t good enough; I have to go see a private doctor and in all likelihood I will be rejected for ESA just like the majority of mental health claimants, and SIXTY-SEVEN PERCENT of claimants overall. But before that, I’ll have to go to a medical assessment where I can detail all of the painful history that has led to my current mental health problems to a strange doctor whom I have no existing therapeutic relationship with, and who is in fact not there in a therapeutic capacity at all. So, I have to see the private doctor who is contracted, essentially, to find reasons to KB me. But! Before I can do all that fun stuff, my OWN doctor needs to sign me off before I can even make a claim for ESA. And at the end of it all, if I am accepted, I will then get a princely seventy quid a week, and will attend the jobcentre for “work focused interviews” and group sessions where I will be patronised about getting a job and prodded about how that psychotherapy’s coming, and am I not mental yet. But until that claim is put through, the jobcentre continue to hassle me about why I haven’t got a job yet. Of course, it’s because there aren’t fucking any, but also because when I do find one to apply for, most employers now want you to detail your health conditions so that they can discriminate and KB anybody troublesome make appropriate accomodations for you in the workplace. And let me tell you, internet, that if you’re honest and put down anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress, then there is no interview for you!

The jobcentre’s attitude to this was “Well, do you really have to tell them?” Quite aside from the fact that they’ve advised me to do something that WILL get me sacked if my employer finds out about it, anybody who employs me is going to have to know so that I am not straining myself at work all the time to keep my mental health problems under wraps, and so that I don’t have to invent a bullshit excuse for where I go for an hour every week.

At this time I hear a “What’s your point, caller?” coming from your direction, and it is this; there is nothing EASY about wading through this system that’s as thick as the shit of a treacle eating pig.

  9. Andy Bowden says:

So the poorest fifth in society pay not only more tax than the richest fifth, but the highest % of tax than any other group, that’s useful information. And the tax that does hit them hardest is VAT, which was raised by a Tory Government – goes to show you they were only low tax for certain groups.

  10. Squeak says:

Fun learnings from my days at HMRC; a beloved trick of those who have cash and want to keep as much of it as possible away from those greedy bastards who want things like the NHS or mebbe a community swimming pool, is to set themselves up as a company director. Even if you’re one dude who is self-employed, you don’t want to be registering as self employed, then you’d get taxed and stuff! So what they do (and I dealt with about ten of these guys every day) is set yourself up with Companies House as a Limited Company, have your house as your registered office, and stick your wife, dodgy pals or anybody else you’re splitting the cash with as co-directors and company secretaries.

Then, when your fees come in, youse get them paid out as Dividends and not wages or fees for a service you provide as a self-employed person. And, AFTER application of your tax free allowance, anything you earn under £37,400 in dividends is taxed at just 10%. If you go over that limit, it’s 32.5%

  11. Kris Seunarine says:

I’m glad you pointed out that UKIP is a libertarian party, while the BNP is a racist authoritarian (socialist) party.

As a member of UKIP and a PPC for Glenrothes in the up-coming general election I am probably at the fringes in terms of some of my views – esp on the NHS, welfare and gun control etc.

    My personal views include:

    1) The NHS needs to be abolished. We need an American style insurance based system. Socialised medicine leads to rationing and substandard healthcare for the majority.
    2) We also need to phase out the welfare state. Get people off benefits and into work. The only way we can do this is if we make unemployment a thoroughly horrible experience. Look at 19th century workhouses for inspiration.
    3) We need to scrap Britain’s authoritarian gun control laws. Britons need to be able to openly carry firearms for self-defence – as they do in some parts of the US. Armed citizens are free citizens. This probably won’t happen immediately, so we need to encourage Britons to demand the right to carry concealed firearms.

I believe in self-sufficiency and personal responsibility. We should care for others by encouraging people to be much more charitable and Christian. The lazy and feckless should be left to rot. Socialism isn’t the same as charity.

These are my views – not UKIP’s.

    You are welcome!

  12. Jack says:

    UR wrong lol.

  13. Andy Bowden says:

Is the abolition of the welfare state/NHS in the UKIP manifesto Kris? I see you say they’re your personal views and not necessarily UKIP’s, will you be sticking them on your election material etc?

I’d like to see how much support UKIP would get if folk knew some of their candidates wanted to abolish the NHS.

  14. Liam says:

I think Kris’ comment is perfectly appropriate on an article entitled “UKIP – more nutter than you think”. As in, Kris seems like AN ABSOLUTE NUTTER.

  16. Andy Bowden says:

Yes the litmus test for anyone’s sanity – appearing on the Alex Jones show.

  17. Kris Seunarine says:

Alex Jones implored everyone to buy gold bullion when it was $275/ troy ounce. Price today is over $1130/toz. Those of us who acted on his advice are well in the money today. The best thing about it is that gold bullion is movable and private. Government cannot tax it to fund welfare programmes!

Nigel Farage, Lord Monckton and Godfrey Bloom have all appeared on the Alex Jones Show. Alex also told everyone to buy firearms and several years’ food storage – as does the LDS church. Those of us who have been listening to him for a few years are in a very strong position right now. Socialists will be among the howling mobs when the collapse arrives. They say that the present depression will make the depression of the 1920s-1930s look like a walk in the park. Those who rely on the state for a living will be the worst hit. That’s why I tell everyone to be as self-sufficient as they can. Pay off your debts, buy at least a year’s supply of storable food etc. Patriots and libertarians see the sense in doing this, while socialists continue to think that big government loves them. We’ll see who’s right within the next 12-18 months.

  18. Liam T says:

    hi kris,
thanks for confirming that UKIP are mental.
    regards.
    Liam

  19. Andy Bowden says:

Kris are you preparing for the recession or the endtimes? You do get that most normal people don’t have the means to store up like some survivalist nutjob?

  20. Gordon says:

Alex Jones also told everyone that the Bilderberg Group had discovered the secret to eternal life and was (for some reason) trying to kill 80% of the world population. Not forgetting, of course, that the EU is a secret Nazi plot. I might have to come up and watch you inform the voters of all this when you attend local hustings.

  21. Sarah says:

Stop feeding him oxygen! Jack got it right. And I quote:

    “UR wrong lol.”

  22. Liam T says:

I think we need a ‘UKIP: WAAAYYY more nutter than you think’ blog.
focusing on the glenrothes constituency in particular

  23. Jack says:

Wow, I’m so happy to learn you like Alex Jones. I have been a fan of Alex’s work for a number of years now, here’s a few of my favourites by him:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ccX_PQtlMY

I really think that voters in Glenrothes need to know about where their UKIP candidate stands on these issues.

  24. TheWorstWitch says:

If I was rich I would totally have an awesome survival bunker and loads of stored food etc – incase the nutters like Kris get their way, or for when climate change goes mental, though.

  25. Kris Seunarine says:

There doesn’t appear to be a socialist party candidate standing in Glenrothes. So, if you’re fed up with the big four, then consider voting UKIP.

We have lots of good ideas. We will take the lowest earners out of income tax by introducing a flat rate tax that kicks in on earnings over £11,500. We will also scrap the VAT and introduce a local sales tax.

On a personal level, I will vote to cut taxes back to the bone. We need to get rid of useless social services. No more public funding of equality groups, gay and lesbian groups etc. I will campaign to reduce the size of government to the bare minimum. People need to take responsibility for their own actions. This means taking responsibility to care for yourself and your own family and not dumping the responsibility onto other people. In other words: No more public money for greedy welfare scroungers!

I am also ‘coming out’ as anti-socialised medicine (anti-NHS). Lord Monckton – our candidate in Perth – has criticised the NHS. I fully support his stance.

  27. Jack says:

    UR still wrong lol.

  28. Kris Seunarine says:

Comrade Sarah has just demonstrated that her socialist ideology cannot stand up to UKIP’s truth. This is why big government socialists want to ban ‘hate’ speech. Communist-socialists and national socialists (Nazis were just a sub-group of communists/socialists) banned free speech because they knew that their evil regimes would crumble if the public discovered the truth.

BTW, I am not homophobic. We love the sinner, but hate the sin. See Lev 18:22.

    UKIP’s PPCs are gentlemen.

  29. Squeak says:

Love the sinner, hate the sin! Lol how generous of you. Piss aff ya bigoted shite.

  30. Kris Seunarine says:

I’m amazed that your socialist menfolk allow you to come out with such vile language. Sarah is obviously lacking the strong discipline that a good UKIP man would administer. Feminism is of Satan!

  31. Jack says:

LOL. I love this guy! Want to come discipline my Satanic sins Kris? Did you watch my Alex links?

  32. Sarah says:

    “Slaver slaver slaver. Gurblesugusgugugguuuururrurruuurrrrrr”

    Actually suck my welt, Kris.

  33. Andy Bowden says:

Nice to see Libertarianism does not extend to who you want to shag.

  34. Jack says:

It’s funny how when you search kris seunarine we’re among the top hits now, straight to an article about how mental UKIP are. I don’t know if any of us has the time to do it, but I think a blog dedicated full time to taking the piss out of UKIP could be really funny.
